Amazon Alexa Tablet 8 in Canada: Price, Specs and Release Date

If you have ever recommended a cheap Fire tablet to a Canadian relative and then spent an evening side-loading YouTube onto it, the Alexa Tablet 8 is the apology. It is the entry point to Amazon’s brand-new tablet family: $299.99 CAD for 64GB, $359.99 for 128GB, announced October 8, 2026 and shipping in Canada from Wednesday, October 14, the day after Thanksgiving Monday. It replaces the Fire HD 8, and it is the first compact Amazon tablet that installs apps straight from the Google Play Store.

Pre-orders are open on Amazon.ca in three colours. Here is what Canadian buyers actually get for the money, based on Amazon’s announcement and the live Canadian listing.

The same tablet starts at US$229.99 in the United States, so the Canadian price tracks a normal exchange conversion instead of punishing us for living north of the border. That makes the Tablet 8 the cheapest way into the new lineup, and the cheapest new tablet Amazon has ever sold in Canada with Google Play on board. If you are watching the calendar: launch pricing on Amazon devices tends to soften around Black Friday, but the pre-order price is the honest baseline today.

The number that matters most here is the weight: 329 grams. That is e-reader territory, and combined with the aluminium shell it means the Tablet 8 should feel like a premium device rather than the plastic Fire slates it replaces. Amazon also lists an ENERGY STAR certification and 8 percent recycled materials in the build.

Google Play finally arrives on a small Amazon tablet

For over a decade, the routine for a Canadian Fire tablet owner was a side-loading guide: install four APKs in the right order, hope nothing breaks after the next update, repeat. The Alexa Tablet 8 ends all of that. YouTube, Gmail, Netflix, Spotify and everything else in the Google Play Store install normally, alongside Amazon’s own apps like Prime Video, Kindle, Audible and Luna.

That single change does more for the small tablet’s usefulness than any spec bump. The 8 was never going to be a power user’s machine; it is a couch, kitchen and bedside device, and app selection was always its weak point in Canada.

Alexa+ on the Alexa Tablet 8 in Canada

Alexa+ is Amazon’s generative AI assistant, and this is not a wait-for-Canada situation: it has been fully available nationwide since June 2026, free for Prime members and $27.99 per month plus tax without Prime. On the Tablet 8 it powers a Dynamic Tab of proactive suggestions, a personalized For You feed, hands-free sessions that do not need a wake word every time, and an Ask Alexa button on the home screen for text or voice questions.

An optional On-Screen Intelligence feature lets Alexa work with whatever is on the display. It ships switched off, shows a clear indicator when active, and asks before it turns on, which is the right default for a device that might live in a child’s bedroom.

Kindle Mode turns it into a reader

Open the Kindle app and the Tablet 8 switches into Kindle Mode with a soft colour fade: notifications are silenced, blue light drops, and the screen fills edge to edge with two-page layouts and page-turn animations. Amazon’s announcement rates the lineup at up to 20 hours of reading on a single charge in this mode, which quietly makes the $299.99 Tablet 8 a genuine alternative to a dedicated e-reader for anyone who wants one device instead of two.

You can let specific contacts or apps break through the reading silence, so a message from home still lands while everything else waits. The mode offers three display themes: Ink Paper for grayscale, Color Paper for a muted newspaper-comics warmth, and Standard for full colour. That is more reading control than any Fire tablet ever offered.

Our take: the Tablet 8 is the cottage, kitchen-table and back-seat tablet. At $299.99 with Google Play and an aluminium body, it is the first cheap Amazon tablet we would hand to a family member without adding “but here is how you install YouTube.” If the screen matters more than the price, spend up for the 11.

Alexa Tablet 8 vs the Fire HD 8 it replaces

Fire HD 8 Alexa Tablet 8
App store Amazon Appstore only Google Play + Amazon apps
Assistant Classic Alexa Alexa+ generative AI
Build Plastic shell Aluminium unibody
Reading mode Standard Kindle app Full-screen Kindle Mode

The Fire HD 8 cost less, but it was an app-limited plastic device. The new tablet asks for more money and delivers a category jump in return. Whether that trade is worth it depends on how much you care about Google Play, which for most Canadians is the entire point.

Who should buy the Alexa Tablet 8 in Canada

  • Buy it if you want a light reading and video tablet, a kitchen recipe screen, a smart-home dashboard, or a shared family device that no one will cry over.
  • Skip it if you want a sharper display and more headroom for multitasking: the Alexa Tablet 11 adds a 2.5K 90Hz screen and 8GB of RAM for $150 more.
  • Skip it too if you need pen or keyboard input: that is the Alexa Tablet 12 Pro‘s job, starting at $749.99.
