Amazon just retired the Fire tablet and started over. On October 8 the company introduced its first-ever Alexa Tablets, three Android slates with the Google Play Store built in, and Canada gets all of them on Wednesday, October 14, 2026, the same day as the US, right after Thanksgiving Monday. Canadian pricing runs from $299.99 for the pocketable Alexa Tablet 8 to $799.99 for the Alexa Tablet 12 Pro with its anti-glare Nanomatte screen, and pre-orders are open on Amazon.ca now.
Our team has covered Amazon’s device lineup from this side of the border for years, and honestly, this is the first time we would tell a Canadian friend to pay attention to an Amazon tablet. Everything below is priced in CAD, checked against the live Amazon.ca listings, and written for how we actually buy tech here.

What Amazon just announced
The Alexa Tablets are Amazon’s first Android-based slates, with the full Google Play Store, the Alexa+ voice assistant built in, and a new Kindle Mode that turns any of them into a distraction-free e-reader. The line consists of three models: the Alexa Tablet 8, the Alexa Tablet 11 and the flagship Alexa Tablet 12 Pro, which supports a keyboard and stylus. The UK and most of Europe follow on October 19.
Devices vice president Kevin Keith introduced the lineup on Amazon’s newsroom. Panos Panay, Amazon’s devices and services chief, told Engadget the family took about two and a half years to build around one guiding question: what is the one thing a screen should do.

Every Alexa Tablet price in Canada
Here is the full Canadian lineup as listed on Amazon.ca, with pre-orders open on every configuration:
In the United States the same lineup starts at US$229.99, and the 12 Pro lists at US$499.99. We did the exchange-rate math on every model in the individual guides below, because for Canadian buyers that math is the whole story.
Is Alexa+ available in Canada?
Yes, and this is the part that makes these tablets a genuinely Canadian launch rather than a US event with Canada tacked on. Alexa+ became fully available across Canada in June 2026 after an early access period that started in November 2025, so the assistant works here on day one. Alexa+ is free for Prime members. Without Prime it costs $27.99 per month plus tax in Canada.
On the new tablets, Alexa+ powers a Dynamic Tab with proactive suggestions, a personalized For You feed and hands-free sessions that do not need a wake word every time. An optional On-Screen Intelligence feature lets Alexa work with what is on the display; it ships switched off and asks before it turns on.
The Canadian version of Alexa+ is not a translated afterthought, either. It works in English and French with real-time language switching mid-conversation, and Amazon tuned it for this country specifically: it knows your hockey team, knows a dépanneur is a corner store, and even gets a well-placed “coudon”. It connects to CBC News, OpenTable reservations and Fodors travel guides out of the gate, with Yelp, Uber Eats and TripAdvisor integrations coming. Amazon’s Toronto and Vancouver tech hub teams helped build the underlying multi-LLM architecture. For Canadian buyers, that local depth is the strongest sign Alexa+ on these tablets is a first-class citizen here, not a wait-and-see.
What happened to Fire tablets?
The Alexa Tablets replace the Fire lineup, which Amazon sold since 2011. Fire tablets ran Fire OS and pushed Amazon’s own Appstore, so Canadian owners spent years side-loading Google apps through workaround guides. The new Amazon Alexa Tablets run Android with the full Google Play Store, so YouTube, Gmail, Netflix and the rest install the way they would on any Android tablet, while Amazon’s own apps such as Prime Video, Kindle, Audible and Luna come preloaded.
Existing Fire tablets keep working and keep their apps. Nothing is being switched off. Amazon told reporters the Alexa Tablets “don’t change anything about the experience Fire tablet owners have today”, and committed to at least four years of software support “after the last Fire tablet we sell”. But the Fire line itself is retired, and these three models are its replacement, not another Fire refresh.
Which Alexa Tablet should you buy in Canada?
Our short read of the spec sheets, with a full guide for each model:
- Smallest spend: the Alexa Tablet 8 in Canada starts at $299.99 and covers reading, recipes, kids and smart-home dashboard duty.
- Best balance for most people: the Alexa Tablet 11 in Canada adds a 2.5K 90Hz screen and 8GB of RAM from $449.99.
- Work, pen and keyboard: the Alexa Tablet 12 Pro in Canada brings a 2.8K 120Hz display, a Dimensity-class chip and stylus support from $749.99.
Amazon also announced Kids Tablet bundles in 8.7 and 11 inch sizes: younger kids get soft bumper cases in Paw Patrol and Barbie designs, older kids get a slim hard case with a built-in kickstand, and every bundle includes a year of Amazon Kids+. New parental tools come along too, including Storybuilder, which lets kids create illustrated stories with their voice, and a redesigned Parent Dashboard with weekly activity insights. Amazon’s announcement puts the Kids Tablets on the same October 14 shipping date as the main lineup; Canadian bundle pricing is not posted yet.

Alexa Tablets vs the iPad
Early US coverage, including Engadget’s hands-on with the 12 Pro, frames the line as an iPad alternative at noticeably lower prices: an aluminium flagship for less than Apple charges for a mid-range iPad. Apple still holds the edge in app polish, ecosystem lock-in and resale value, which matters if you are the kind of Canadian who sells a tablet every two years to fund the next one. Amazon counters with price, Google Play, hands-free Alexa+ and tight integration with Prime content.
One honest note: we have not tested these tablets yet, and neither have most outlets writing about them this week. Treat launch coverage everywhere, ours included, as a first read of the spec sheets rather than a verdict. We will update as soon as review units and Canadian hands-on impressions land.
